Let's talk "Digital Breaks"

Let's talk "Digital Breaks"

A few weeks ago I went "radio silent" on all of my socials, group text threads and other communication apps. I just needed a break. Sometimes life gets overwhelming and it's good to take a step back and regroup.  It's important to prioritize your well-being and mental health, even if it means taking a break from digital communication.

While social media can be a useful tool in many ways, it can also add stress and bring discouragement when all you see are the highlight reels of others.  It's important to remember that social media often shows only the best parts of people's lives, not the full picture.

Sometimes it's not possible to take digital breaks due to work and other responsibilities but there are a few things you can implement that are helpful. First, you can use a walking pad while scrolling so you're moving your body and releasing mood enhancing endorphins. I have a friend who puts her phone in her office to charge at night. This prevents what she calls "doom scrolling" before bed, and instead allows opportunity to unwind with conversation, prayer or a chapter in a good book. I did all of these over my social media break and it was extremely helpful.  Another suggestion is to set specific time limits for social media usage each day to prevent excessive scrolling. This can help create a healthier balance between screen time and other activities.

You can also mute notifications and/or unfollow certain accounts that you may find distracting or discouraging. On the flip side you can seek out accounts that encourage and uplift. Accounts that share personal growth, productivity and leadership tips are among my favs.

Whatever method you choose to unwind, may it be weeks, days, or moments, always remember to treat yourself with kindness and prioritize activities that rejuvenate you.
